Chiropractor Jani Mikkonen

Professional ethos

I’m committed to patient-centered care, clinical excellence and lifelong learning. I’m clinically specialised on chronic (long term) and multifactorial neuromusculoskeletal patient cases.

Clinical work and expertise

Chiropractic neurology specialist care is an effective treatment for many types of neuromusculoskeletal conditions (conditions which affect the locomotor and nervous system). Most common complaints seen in the clinic are

  • Chronic musculoskeletal or head pain
  • Dizziness, vertigo, and balance problems
  • Functional breathing problems
  • Neurologic rehabilitation and musculoskeletal symptom treatment on different chronic neurologic and rheumatic diseases

The main goals of treatment are a decrease of symptoms and increased function of the neuromusculoskeletal system. The first office visit consists of a thorough history, examination, plan of management and most common treatment (if there no other studies needed before treatment). Treatment can include manual therapy, acupuncture, neurologic rehabilitation, therapeutic exercise and lifestyle advice. The initial consultation takes forty minutes and subsequent treatment and rehabilitation appointments take twenty or forty minutes depending on individual needs.

Academics and specialist studies

My academic background consists of  Chiropractic degrees in the U.K. 2003-2007 and clinical neurology specialist studies in the U.S. 2013-2017, where I was granted DACNB (Diplomate of American Chiropractic Neurology Board) status. Currently, I’m a PhD student of Clinical Medicine program at the University of Eastern Finland, where I’m working at the multidisciplinary research group. My main research interest is a pain modulation mechanisms of the central nervous system.

I’m a member and/or delegate of many national and international multidisciplinary expert panels, committees, and associations. I have an active collaborating national and international network with medical doctors, dentists, colleagues, physiotherapists and psychologists. The clinic in the Helsinki city centre attracts patients from all corners of Finland.

Extensive publication record

So far, I have published over fifty articles in different health-related, professional and scientific publications. I’m one of the authors of the evidence-based multidisciplinary pain book, which was published in March 2020. I wrote book chapters about breathing exercises for pain management, manual therapy and post-concussion pain syndrome. I have been interviewed and featured numerous times for different leading Finnish national newspapers and health magazines on different aspects relating to neuromusculoskeletal diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
